Rubber Stamps on Glossy Surfaces?

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Rubber stamps are great for so many uses, however there is a time when a customized address labels is the better choice. Most rubber stamp ink is forumalated to be stamped on matte surfaces, which 99% of the time, what most customers use stamps for. There is that 1% of customers that use stamps on glossy surfaces. The problem with stamping on glossy surfaces (such as glossy catalogs, doorhangers etc), is that it is a non poreous material, so the ink will only smear.

There is specially stamp ink that pads are are formulated specifically for stamping on glossy or non poreous surfaces. If you are stamping on a glossy or non-poreous make sure the ink you purchase is designed specifically for that use.

Another alternative would be to use a customized self adhesive address label. Address labels can be customized exactly the same way a rubber stamp can be customized. You can order customized address labels, or you can print your own. All you need is blank label stock, and inkjet or laser printer and a template that is used for designing the label. If you purchase blank labels from an office supply store, there should be instructions on downloading the proper template. If you use a program such as Microsoft Word, Printmaster Gold, Printshop Deluxe etc, they contain several label templates that are compatible with the most popular label sizes.

What is the difference between Regular Rubber Stamps, Self-Inking, and Pre-Inked stamps?

Regular Rubber Stamps

Regular rubber stamps, are inexpensive to purchase. They require a stamp ink pad. The advantage of this kind of stamp is that it is very inexpensive. Also, since it requires a seperate stamp pad, you can use different colored ink pads with the same stamp. The main drawback is that it requires cleaning after each use.

Self Inking Stamps

Self-Inking Stamps have and internal stamp pad inside the stamp housing. The stamp rests agains the stamp pad. When you press down to stamp, a mechanical mechanism flips the rubber stamp down toward the paper where it makes contact and transfers the stamped image to the paper. When the stamp is released, the stamp flips back up into the housing and againt the ink pad until you stamp the next item. Self Inking Stamps are much more convenient than Regular Rubber Stamps and last for thousands of impressions before needing to be re-inked.

Pre Inked Stamps

A Pre-Inked Stamp, does not use an internal or external stamp pad. The stamp die is impregnated with ink. These are equially convenient as a self-inking stamp. One note of caution, the stamp usually has a cover. Make sure to replace the cover, so the stamp does not dry out.
